On Monday 29 July Professor Anthony Butler, of the Department of Political Studies, will present a lecture on Cyril Ramaphosa’s rise to president, exploring how he moved from the margins of politics in the Thabo Mbeki era to the state presidency.

He will discuss Ramaphosa’s business career, the implications of the Marikana killings, and the pitfalls of presidential succession politics. He will also make some predictions about what the future holds.

Butler has penned the only comprehensive political biography of Ramaphosa: Cyril Ramaphosa – The road to presidential power.

This Summer School Extension lecture will be presented by the Centre for Extra-Mural Studies. The location is Lecture Theatre 3, Kramer Building on middle campus, from 18:00 to 19:00. Butler’s book will be on sale after the lecture.
