The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) has endorsed last month’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The University of Cape Town (UCT) continues to lead in Africa and now sits in the top 7.5% of universities worldwide, up from the previous 8.7% position.
Solomon Patrick Mabilo moved the motion during a session of the NCOP: “According to 2025–2026 Best Global Universities ranking in Africa, seven out of 10 best global universities in Africa are from South Africa.”
In a letter to UCT Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela, NCOP chairperson, Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, congratulated the university: “The council notes with utmost pride and appreciation that UCT is among these universities and congratulates UCT for its best quality performance, which is recognised in the global knowledge production system.”
