ALUMNUS AWARDED FOR HIS VISION

UCT alumnus Dr Thom Mittag recently received a prestigious international prize in eye research in Geneva.

Mittag was awarded the 2002 Balazs Prize for his “outstanding contributions to the field of eye research” by the Endre A Balazs committee of the International Society for Eye Research (ISER) at the XV International Congress for Eye Research (ICER).

Mittag obtained his PhD in organic chemistry from UCT, and then pursued further studies in the United States. His interest in eye research started as a result of an accidental explosion in the UCT Chemistry laboratory in 1963, in which he lost sight in one eye.

He is currently Professor of Ophthalmology and Professor of Pharmacology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. A distinguished glaucoma scientist, Mittag has been an active contributor at research meetings worldwide for the past 30 years and has collaborated with research groups in Europe and Japan.

UCT-HARVARD MANDELA FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE

Applications are open for UCT-Harvard Mandela Fellowships, established through generous support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York. These post-doctoral awards are intended to strengthen connections between Harvard and UCT through facilitating periods of study and research by UCT academic staff at Harvard's WE Du Bois Institute for African-American Studies.

Candidates may apply through the Office of the Dean at the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED). Applicants from any disciplinary field will be considered but must demonstrate how their research will contribute to the ongoing development of teaching and learning in South African higher education.

Fellowships may be held for one semester or a full year on the Harvard academic calendar. The award includes a stipend, and subventions for housing, medical coverage, air travel between South Africa and the US and an allowance for attending an academic conference in the US during tenure of the award. Details of the package will be negotiated with candidates individually.

Applications should outline their intended study and research while at the WE Du Bois Institute, and demonstrate the relationship of this work to the development of teaching and learning in higher education. They should also include a curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of two referees.

Successful applicants will be expected to submit a substantial report on their research at Harvard on their return to Cape Town. An information sheet is available on request from Kathy Erasmus. The completed application package should be sent to her at the Centre for Higher Education Development, Hlanganani Building, Upper Campus, UCT. The closing date is October 30, 2002.
