UCT statement in relation to false allegations made on social media about the finances of the Faculty of Law
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has taken note of the recent social media posts that make very serious allegations about the financial management of the UCT Faculty of Law. The allegations include claims of fraud and other impropriety, and specifically include claims that the former dean of the faculty, Professor Penelope Andrews, was involved in this inappropriate activity. The posts also included parts of financial statements from the faculty, claiming that these were evidence of fraudulent behaviour and that this caused the institution to force Professor Andrews to resign.

UCT establishes first South African extraordinary unit to probe problems of antibiotic resistance
A new multi-disciplinary unit has been established at the University of Cape Town (UCT) to address the origins and effects of antimicrobial resistance and to develop potential preventative strategies. It is the first South African unit dedicated to studying the origin, development and fundamental drivers of antimicrobial resistance and multidrug-resistant pathogens (bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms that cause diseases).

The University of Cape Town's Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D), the African Academy of Sciences (AAS), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) have committed funding for the discovery of new drugs for diseases endemic to Africa over the next 2 years.

UCT's child nursing initiative wins prestigious Global Health Impact award
The University of Cape Town's (UCT) Child Nurse Practice Development Initiative (CNPDI) Critical Care education team has won the 2018 Burdett Nursing Award: Global Health Impact. This award recognises the team's outstanding contribution to the development of paediatric nursing across the continent. CNDPI is a partnership between UCT and the Red Cross Children's Hospital - Africa's premier training centre.

UCT Biomedical engineers design affordable adrenaline auto-injector to assist people prone to allergies
People with allergies to certain foods, bee stings, and so on, develop an auto-immune condition called anaphylaxis and when the person is exposed to a substance that triggers an allergic reaction, they need to use an adrenaline auto-injector within 15 minutes. If they are unable to do this the situation could be fatal - according to Associate Professor Mike Levin, head of the Division of Asthma and Allergy at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
