UCT engineers have designed a device to improve the quality of life for asthma sufferers
Every year in South Africa asthma claims the lives of 58 500 people, and there are 3.9 million people who live with this disease. About 10% of adults and 20% of children suffer from asthma, and the country has the fourth highest asthma-related death toll in the world. Most deaths due to asthma can be prevented with proper treatment.

UCT study finds that most restaurant owners support a complete ban on smoking in restaurants
South Africa's anti-smoking measures are about to get tougher. Big Tobacco may have intensified its marketing blitz in the developing world, but South Africa's Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, isn't having any of it. At the World Conference on Tobacco or Health held in Cape Town recently, Motsoaledi announced a 100% ban on smoking in public areas. This means that the dedicated smoking areas in restaurants and other hospitality establishments will no longer be available.

Survey reveals UCT graduates are increasingly entrepreneurial
While South Africa is grappling with high rates of unemployment and the world of work is in near constant flux, University of Cape Town (UCT) graduates are becoming increasingly entrepreneurial. This was one of the major findings of the 2018 graduate exit survey administered by the UCT Careers Service.

UCT explores female conflict and mate choice dilemmas in Southern Pied Babbler birds
Direct conflicts between females, as well as the presence of multiple potential mates for males, play a big part in determining when adult offspring breed. This is according to University of Cape Town's FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology research findings, recently published in Molecular Ecology on group-living Southern Pied Babblers residing in the South African Kalahari Desert.

Merck, UCT and Medicines for Malaria Venture join forces to feed the antimalarial pipeline
The Merck Global Health Institute, the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) have joined forces to find new therapeutic solutions against malaria. Through this collaborative effort in drug discovery, the partners underscore their firm and long-term commitment to contribute to the discovery and development of new treatments to fight malaria.

UCT researchers call for new TB vaccine strategies for HIV-exposed infants
Globally, tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the biggest challenges facing public healthcare systems in low-and-middle-income countries. South Africa is still considered a TB high-burden country, with TB being the leading fatal infectious disease, surpassing HIV.

South Africa to play key role in unprecedented international scientific expedition off Antarctica
In an event held at The Royal Geographical Society in London today, it was announced that, during January/February 2019, a major international scientific expedition will explore one of the coldest, harshest and most remote locations in the world: the Weddell Sea off Antarctica.

UCT's Psychology Department to host discussion on a global research initiative to address violence against children
Approximately 1 billion children worldwide are victims of violence and abuse every year. The consequences are devastating and include poor neuro-cognitive development, emotional problems, externalising behaviours, substance use, and poor physical health including a shorter life expectancy.

UCT to honour struggle icon Chris Hani on 25th anniversary of assassination
In recognition of the late anti-apartheid veteran, Chris Hani, the University of Cape Town (UCT) will celebrate the life and legacy of the inspirational leader, by renaming the New Science Lecture Theatre to the Chris Hani Lecture Theatre. This is to honour the late icon's contribution to South Africa's democracy.

UCT graduate proves through stubborn determination in the face of adversity anything is possible
After 9 long and difficult years, including being academically excluded 4 times, suffering from bouts of depression, and the birth of his baby girl, Siyabonga Mdlalose recently graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Statement on the passing of struggle stalwart Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela
