UCT to host the World University Debating Championships
The University of Cape Town (UCT) will host the largest student-run event globally, the World University Debating Championships. From 27 December 2018 to 4 January 2019 debating students from Malaysia, Germany, Mexico, Nigeria and the United States, among 45 others will descend on the city in hopes of becoming world champions.

UCT student overcomes odds to be the first post-doctoral graduate in her department
Tafadzwa Mushonga will be the first PhD graduate from the Centre for Environmental Humanities South (CEHS) when she graduates on 14 December at the University of Cape Town (UCT). But her path towards graduation has involved major setbacks. A big blow came early in her academic career when she suffered the loss of her role model, her father. His death in 2006 was followed five years later by the loss of her mother.

UCT to host VC robing ceremony and announce Memorial Hall renaming
The University of Cape Town will host a media briefing during which the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, will make a historic announcement on the renaming of the Memorial Hall.

UCT ceremonies to take graduands tally to over 7000
Approximately 1885 students - including 118 Doctoral and 780 Master's graduands - are scheduled to graduate during the ceremonies to be held in the Memorial Hall at the University of Cape Town from 13-14 December. This will take the total number of students who graduated at UCT this year to over 7000.

Gugulethu-born UCT graduand uses education to rise above challenges
Sonwabo Ngcelwane will receive his master's degree in Sociology from the University of Cape Town (UCT), with distinction, this week. It is his third degree and fifth tertiary qualification. From a young age, Ngcelwane has seen education as the key to rising above one's circumstances - no matter how challenging. Whenever he has faced obstacles, throwing himself into his studies has helped him gain perspective and maintain an even keel.

A painful family tragedy produces a master's degree for UCT graduand
An unspeakable family tragedy has yielded a master's degree for University of Cape Town (UCT) student Mabuyi Mhlanga after her young daughter was killed instantly after being hit by a car while crossing the road two years ago in Durban. Mhlanga then decided to seek answers and healing by throwing herself into a master's degree related to road safety around schools.

Young UCT scientist joins top fellowship to advance TB research
Emerging scientist from the University of Cape Town (UCT), Mandy Mason, is one of five scientists to be selected from around Africa among the first cohort of the prestigious Crick African Network (CAN) fellows. The scientist is looking forward to broadening her network and knowledge in the field of Tuberculosis (TB).

University of Cape Town (UCT) PhD candidate, Lerato Hlaka, received a PhD fellowship at the L'Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science programme ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya last night, 6 December 2018.

Global academic collaboration - a first for medical and health humanities in Africa
Medical humanities is a well-established field in the UK and USA but an emerging field on the African continent. The BMJ's Medical Humanities Journal will soon publish the first English-language special issue to deal exclusively with work on and about Medical and Health Humanities (MHH) in Africa. The Journal will showcase the work of new and established academics and practitioners working in the field in the December 2018 special issue and accompanying series of blogs and podcasts.
