Arts project appreciates Macassar and its people
A project aimed at changing the tarnished image of the community of Macassar township near Somerset West, as being home only to crime, poverty and other social ills is reaping fruits after a collaboration between the University of Cape Town's (UCT) School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics and the community. Local communities central to ending wildlife trafficking and disrupting transnational criminal networks - UCT study
The international donor community and government have disbursed millions of rands to fight illegal wildlife trade but have so far not succeeded in disrupting or ending illicit rhino poaching. Many local impoverished communities live near or in protected wildlife areas in South Africa. According to new research by the University of Cape Town's (UCT) Global Risk Governance Programme, local communities can be used as change agents in tackling the illegal wildlife economy.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is spearheading a study that seeks to resolve the global difficulties associated with identifying human remains found in the ocean or those that wash-up ashore. Its success will help to resolve mysterious cases and provide closure to many families whose members have died at sea and could not be identified.

A team of University of Cape Town (UCT) students have come together to form a start-up company, Zaio. The start-up assists student developers build an information technology skills profile through coding challenges and practical experience, hopefully helping them to ultimately land their dream job. At the same time, the Zaio platform provides other start-ups with access to affordable web and app development.

UCT hockey player set to represent South Africa at Youth Olympics in Argentina
First-year physiotherapy student Nepo Serage has been making big waves in hockey circles since becoming the University of Cape Town's (UCT) first-team goalkeeper just eight months after joining the squad. Eighteen-year-old Serage will be jetting off to Buenos Aires, Argentina as part of the team representing South Africa at the Youth Olympic Games from 6-18 October.
