UCT student tech start-up offers technology and entrepreneurship skills to students
A team of University of Cape Town (UCT) students have come together to form a start-up company, Zaio. The start-up assists student developers build an information technology skills profile through coding challenges and practical experience, hopefully helping them to ultimately land their dream job. At the same time, the Zaio platform provides other start-ups with access to affordable web and app development.

UCT hockey player set to represent South Africa at Youth Olympics in Argentina
First-year physiotherapy student Nepo Serage has been making big waves in hockey circles since becoming the University of Cape Town's (UCT) first-team goalkeeper just eight months after joining the squad. Eighteen-year-old Serage will be jetting off to Buenos Aires, Argentina as part of the team representing South Africa at the Youth Olympic Games from 6-18 October.

UCT study shows 30% increased transmission risk of parental depression to adolescent children
Research from the University of Cape Town (UCT) has found that an adolescent's risk of being depressed increased by 30% if their mother was depressed. While this showed that the intergenerational transmission of depression from parent to child was a huge factor in adolescent mental health, it wasn't clear whether this was due to genetic or environmental factors.

Candidate tuberculosis (TB) vaccine can prevent active pulmonary TB in HIV-negative adults in phase II study
The New England Journal of Medicine this week published the primary results of an ongoing phase IIb clinical trial testing the candidate tuberculosis vaccine M72/AS01E. This analysis shows that M72/AS01E significantly reduced the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis disease in HIV-negative adults who were already infected with latent TB at the time of vaccination. The results demonstrate an overall vaccine efficacy of 54%, with varied response rates observed in different demographic sub-groups. The candidate vaccine had an acceptable safety and reactogenicity profile.

UCT team helping to build a solar powered house for international competition
Three University of Cape Town (UCT) lecturers are part of the only team representing sub Saharan Africa in an international competition to design and build a fully functional, modular, net-zero-energy house in Stellenbosch. The competition, Solar Decathlon, takes place in Morroco next year.

UCT's new policy puts sharp focus on sexual diversity
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has officially launched its Inclusivity Policy for Sexual Orientation. The policy promotes UCT's commitment towards a culture that has zero-tolerance towards all forms of discrimination and aims to ensure consistent engagement between students and staff and create an environment that respects and celebrates inclusion of sexually diverse staff and students on campus.
