Groote Schuur Hospital performs South Africa’s first bowel enteroscopy
A team of academics at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Division of Medical Gastroenterology have performed South Africa’s first successful bowel enteroscopy (endoscopy of the small bowel). The cutting-edge procedure was carried out at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) and is set to transform the way clinicians access and examine the previously inaccessible small bowel – using a minimally invasive technique.

COVID-19 death rate exacerbated on the continent
A paper published in The Lancet states that the death rate following COVID-19 critical care admission is higher in Africa than any other region in the world. Excess deaths are estimated at between 11 and 23 per 100 admissions, compared to the global average. As the largest study out of Africa about COVID-19 critical care – this is likely also the only study in this setting with a significant cohort of HIV-positive patients.

Effecting change in STEM must start at school level
Dr Zina Ndabeni made history when she joined the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Department of Physics in 2020. As the first black South African woman to take up an academic role in the department, Dr Ndabeni said there’s serious work to be done to nurture young black students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

UCT scientist awarded prestigious AXA Research Chair in Non-Communicable Diseases
Lara Dugas, an Honorary Professor in Human Biology at the University of Cape Town (UCT), has been awarded a prestigious AXA Research Chair, titled The AXA Research Chair in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Epidemiology. The Chair is only the second awarded to a researcher in Africa and will allow Dugas to continue her ongoing research into how the lived environment impacts long-term NCD outcomes in African populations.
