A blood test to find those at high risk of tuberculosis in people living with HIV
A new study has reported findings of a host blood test that can find those at high risk of tuberculosis (TB) in people living with HIV. The blood mRNA biomarker differentiated between people living with HIV who had active TB from those without TB and predicted which individuals would develop TB within 15 months.

Letter to IOL about Naidu and the student suicide
An article in The Sunday Independent (“Emergency council meeting as UCT crisis deepens”, 12 April 2021) attempts to draw a connection between the tragedy of a student’s death in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and a series of recent, unrelated events at the executive level of the University of Cape Town (UCT). In effect, a personal tragedy was hijacked to present a distorted view of the wider management landscape at UCT.

UCT’s first-ever Google Research Scholars Program recipients
Associate Professor Amir Patel and Dr Mohohlo Tsoeu, both from the University of Cape Town’s Department of Electrical Engineering and its newly formed African Robotics Unit , have become the institution’s first-ever recipients of search engine giant Google’s Research Scholar Program.
