Roxy Davis received her PhD in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, focusing on Ocean-Based Therapy, on Wednesday, 4 September 2024.

Growing up near the ocean in Kommetjie, Cape Town, Roxy has always felt a deep connection to the sea – a connection that has helped her complete groundbreaking research on surf therapy for children with disabilities in South Africa.

Her study, titled: A World of Possibilities: An Exploration of Experiences of Children with Disabilities’ Participation in a Surf Therapy Programme in South Africa, reveals how surf therapy can transform lives by promoting mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Roxy’s journey with UCT began in 2019, with her research initially planned as a master’s study but later upgraded to a PhD. Despite facing significant challenges – including navigating her studies during the COVID-19 pandemic while pregnant and managing a household, Davis remained committed to her goal.

Davis’s research not only highlights the powerful impact of surf therapy on children but also provides a guide for implementing these programmes across South Africa.
