Fun times: Learners enjoy themselves at the UCT schools tournament.

UCT took second place at the Volleyball Classic 4s Co-ed Tournament, held at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) on May 6. It was an open tournament in which not only universities but also corporates and other volleyball clubs within the region were invited to participate. It was the first time that such an event has taken place and there were six teams that took part. The day kicked off with a round robin, followed by double elimination and then the semi and final rounds. UCT did very well to make it into the final against Varisty Blues, a team comprised of students from different tertiary institutions, including UCT. UCT lost a close match by 22-28. The team also took the award for best-dressed side at the event.

A week before, on April 29, the UCT team also hosted its annual schools tournament. The event aims to promote and develop volleyball within schools from less advantaged areas within the Western Cape. This development initiative was first launched in 2005, where the event was well attended and met with much enthusiasm from the participants. This year, due to the long weekend, there were considerably fewer schools taking part. However, the day proved enjoyable and the impressive level of volleyball displayed by the participants promises a bright future for the growing sport. South Peninsula 1 were the victors in the ladies' division, defeating Saints All Stars ladies 2-0 in the final. Saints All Stars men proved to be the top team when they defeated Ocean View High in the close and exciting final of the men's division.
