The UCT Mathematics Competition, now in its 27th year and thought to be the largest of its kind, is still pulling them in. At the most recent sitting of the event at the end of April, a total of 6 002 grade eight to 12 learners from 133 schools wrapped their heads around a slew of grade-specific maths problems. Learners tackled the questions either individually or in pairs. Winners will be announced on May 31, when about 150 top performers will receive prizes from sponsors Arivia.kom, Oxford University Press and Casio at an awards ceremony at the Baxter. Guest speaker at the event will be UCT's Prof Tim Noakes.
