Grad edition call

The information and media department is producing a special graduation edition of Monday Paper on June 12 to celebrate our mid-year graduands. This is a call to all heads of department - and others - to let us have any leads; stories about eye-popping research or inventions, mouth-gaping achievements and people. Choral and string concert

The Pro Cantu Youth Choir and the Sontonga String Quartet will give a joint performance on May 29 and 30, featuring a variety of choral and string quartet pieces. The choir hails from Cape Town and consists of young people between the ages of 14 and 25 from all over the Cape Peninsula. Its mission is to provide an opportunity for young South Africans to sing in a choir of the highest international standards, focusing on a repertoire drawn from Western cultural traditions. The quartet has established itself as one of the finest exponents in South Africa of both the classical and contemporary repertoires. The venue is the Baxter Theatre and the time is 19h30. The price of tickets is R85. There are discounts for senior citizens and students. Block bookings of 10 or more pay R65 for a ticket. You can book at Computicket or at the Baxter Theatre. Inaugural lecture

Prof Vivienne Russell (human biology) will deliver her inaugural lecture, Neurobiology of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, on May 31, 2006, at 17h30 in the Student Learning Lecture Theatre in the Anatomy Building, health sciences faculty.

Nigeria talk

On May 29 the Nigerian Students' Society will host a talk, Democratisation Process in Africa-Nigeria as a Case Study (the third-term nemesis debate), featuring a panel including Mary Simons, (political science), Cathleen Powells (constitutional law), Dr Thiven Reddy (political science), Zwelethu Jolode (political science) Ademola Rabiu, (chairperson, EBE faculty), and Nigeria High Commission representatives. The African Film Festival

In celebration of Africa Week, the Centre for African Studies Gallery will be hosting an African Film Festival on May 22, 24 and 26 at 17h00. Films on show will include My Son the Bride and Spirits of Uhadi (South Africa); Lightbulb (Mozambique) and Witch Hunting Today (USA/Ghana). Come and celebrate the continent's diversity and rich cultural heritage through film. Free movies, snacks and drinks!
