The day, in May 1963, that the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was founded.

Leaders of 30 of the then 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The OAU's successor, the African Union, was established on 9 July 2002, and now comprises 53 member states.
