25th year of Alma Ata

15 September 2003
This week UCT's Faculty of Health Sciences celebrates the 25th year of the Alma Ata declaration on Primary Health Care, namely the promise to ensure basic health care for all.

The product of the International Conference on Primary Health Care in 1978, the Alma Ata declaration, stated that by the year 2000, all people around the world, should receive basic health care, a goal that has yet to be reached.
In celebration of this declaration, health sciences will host a programme that will include poster displays, videos during lunch hours and displays of primary health care material in the libraries of the medical school.

The highlight of the week takes place on Thursday, September 18, at the faculty's New Learning Centre at 17h00.

The event will include a host of medical professionals who will speak on health care. They include the Deputy Dean of Health Sciences at UCT, Associate Professor Gonda Perez, Professor Marietjie De Villiers from Stellenbosch University, Dr Fareed Abdullah, Deputy Director General of the Department of Health in the Western Cape, Dr John Rhode former director of the Eastern Cape Management Equity Project, and the University of the Western Cape's Professor Dave Sanders.

Many community organisations and NGOs have been invited to this event.
