Kresge Foundation visitsWelcome: (From left) Joan Rapp of UCT libraries with Kresge's Rip Rapson and Dr Phil Clay, and Sarah Archer (Development and Alumni Department).

A high-level Kresge Foundation delegation from the US visited UCT earlier this month to see how their work suits the South African context. The visitors included the foundation's president, Rip Rapson, and board member Dr Phil Clay. The foundation supports programmes and institutions that promote access and success for disadvantaged students. The foundation has awarded UCT R12.5 million to date, and has pledged a further R7.4 million in the form of a challenge grant for the South African Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) Summer Training Programme in Social Science in 2011. Vice-chancellor Dr Max Price spoke to the visitors about the challenges and opportunities in the South African higher education arena, and about how these relate to UCT. The work of SALDRU and the Centre for Higher Education Development was presented to the delegation, who also toured the main library.
