FORMER REGISTRAR DR LEONARD READ died on 3 September at the age of 85. Read joined UCT in 1947 and steadily climbed the rungs from clerk in the administrative office to an assistant accountant to a deputy finance officer in the same department. He then became the deputy registrar for finance, followed by his appointment as registrar in 1978. Read reached the pensionable age of 60 in 1982 but decided - upon invitation by the university council - to stay on for another year, and officially retired from the university on 1 January 1984. Read returned to UCT in 1990 as a redevelopment project officer at medical school for a year. He is survived by his daughter Jo, his son George and five grandchildren.

JENNIFER COHEN, a "hardworking and inspirational" PhD student in the School of Language and Literatures, has died. She passed away on 19 August due to multiple sclerosis (MS)-related illness. Cohen studied at UCT, having finished her master's on the Biblical book of Judges in 1999. She studied Hebrew literature written in South Africa. "May Jennifer Cohen be an inspiration to many of our students who have to overcome difficulties during their academic career," said Dr Azila Reisenberger of the Hebrew Section, "The aspiration for knowledge is what keeps our human spirit and dignity above all enduring experiences."
