UCT MBA students unite for fun and fundraising

13 November 2006

Full-steam ahead: Modular MBA student David Crewe-Brown gives it his best as he heads down the GSB corridors.

Students on the Modular MBA programme at the UCT Graduate School of Business (GSB) have made innovative use of the annual Jailyard Sprint - students dash along the school corridors - to raise funds for an NGO called Ikamva Labantu.

Ikamva Labantu (The Future of our Nation) functions as a development catalyst for many community-based social service programmes in South Africa. The NGO delivers four core services to all affiliated projects and programmes: health services, poverty alleviation and food security, education and capacity building, and job creation.

The GSB students raised R5 860 at this year's sprint.

"This was truly a joint effort, though," says the Modular MBA's Angela Rametsi, "as all the current classes were involved through their kind support of the project."

The official winner of the sprint was Richard Kennedy (full-time MBA), while the Skateboard Relay was won by the MBA full-time team of Bernard Sellmeyer, Jaco Voster, Richard Kennedy and Marius Hugo.

Sponsors for the day included SABMiller (beverages, T-Shirts, hampers and other prizes towards the raffle), ABI (non-alcoholic beverages and prizes), Senpost (main prizes for the raffle, including an iPod nano and a Sennheiser IP phone) and Jordaan Oosthuysen Nangolo Quantity Surveyors (catering and entertainment, thanks to Iyaloo Ya Nangolo, an MBA Modular student).

Joining Rametsi on the Jailyard Sprint organising committee were Lawrence Timpson (MBA full-time), David Crewe-Brown (Modular MBA) and Jaco Van Graan (Modular MBA).

The funds raised are going towards a year-end function Ikamva Labantu is planning for children at all the crèches it works with.
