Parents and students received a warm welcome to UCT.

“Six years ago, I walked on this campus and manifested studying here,” said Bizanla Cudjoe, who is about to begin her academic journey with the University of Cape Town (UCT). She said she is delighted to join its ranks.

The sweltering sun was beaming on Sarah Baartman Hall on Saturday, 31 January, as the university welcomed parents and their bright-eyed children to begin their journey at UCT.

Students’ Representative Council (SRC) president, Kitso Mojapelo, reminded the audience that UCT is a place of shared responsibility. Speakers reminded first-years that they own the responsibility of making the most of the next few years. In return, the institution will cultivate an environment in which they can thrive.

Campus was a hive of activity.

“There’s a place for everyone at this institution,” Mojapelo said. “There’s an opportunity for your child to develop and grow and it’s important that we encourage them. UCT has a lot of support structures that are available to them.”

He added: “UCT is a university of shared responsibility. As the SRC, we are here to support your children through their journey, together with management.”

Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Mosa Moshabela welcomed parents and students to “the global centre of excellence – UCT”. “You have signed a social contract to work with us to ensure that your child succeeds. You are now a UCT parent. It’s a title. It’s a badge of honour which you must own. Congratulations to you,” said Professor Moshabela, much to the elation of the audience.

“As a UCT parent, you are becoming a very important stakeholder to the university. You will, for the next few years, have an interest in what happens at UCT. You will be interested in the well-being and success of your child. Thank you in advance for being a great ambassador to the university.”

“I’m at ease leaving my daughter in the care of UCT.”

Moshabela continued: “As hard as it is, I invite parents to allow for their child’s growth and development. Taking responsibility and leading are part of their training. They are undergoing a transformation right now. We will ensure that when they leave, they understand the complexities of the world,” he said.

Parents who spoke to UCT News expressed a sense of calm upon hearing about the various avenues and support that is available on campus. They noted that the responsibility now rests with their children. Esther Bishop, who was visibly emotional dropping off her daughter said, “I couldn’t be prouder to be dropping her off at UCT. It’s such a privilege. You hear that your child is one of 4 000 that have been chosen to be here. My aspirations are for her to become a fierce, independent and wonderful woman. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

An equally elated Thembisile Bhengu said: “I’m at ease leaving my daughter in the care of UCT. The VC put us all at ease. It’s normal for us as parents to have these mixed emotions. I want her to enjoy herself. She must be happy and have fun because university life is short. I want her to have the best of the university environment.” Sinqobile Bhengu, Thembisile’s daughter, articulated her excitement at being at the institution.

‘Place to be’

“This is a dream come true. I am absolutely thrilled to be here. I’m going to miss my mom. It’s going to be the first time being away from home; however, I feel I’m going to have a fantastic time at UCT and I’m looking forward to it. I trust that the university will take good care of me. UCT is the place to be,” she added.

Parents and students were then able to listen to respective faculty deans during information sessions. Orientation and registration will continue until Friday, 13 February.
