Students more than just talk

Emer Prof Luigi Nassimbeni, in his capacity as chair of the South African Friulian Society, which encourages and supports the study of all things Italian, presented Sanja Stanojevic with the society's annual scholarship as best first-year student from the Italian Studies Section in 2005. Stanojevic was but one of the nearly 50 students to pick up about 90 medals plus book prizes and scholarships on offer at the School of Languages and Literatures' (SLL) annual class medal ceremony, held two weeks ago. At the event, SLL's eight sections recognised those students who excelled in 2005. As usual, the occasion attracted international guests - this year consul-generals Dr Domingo Alvim (Portuguese embassy) and Dr Alberto Vecchi (Italian) made the trip to UCT to present students with their awards.

Netcare shows it cares

Doctors don't seem to forget the time they spend at SHAWCO, ie UCT's Students' Health & Welfare Centres Organisation. Two weeks ago, UCT graduate Dr Kerrin Begg (class of 1994) and colleagues from hospital and pharmacy group Netcare handed a cheque worth R396 000 - a handy sum by anyone's reckoning - to the organisation. And, for once, SHAWCO didn't have to do any asking. Netcare was looking for a worthy cause to help out, and Begg, who'd run the student group's health project while a student at UCT, remembered the good work done from the SHAWCO mobile clinics in Western Cape communities. SHAWCO plans to do even more of that selfsame good work with the R396 000.
