Res4Res Theatre Festival

The Res4Res Theatre Festival takes place from August 10 - 13 and exposes a range of university students, particularly those housed in residences and who may not normally have the opportunity to participate on stage, to the challenge and thrill of making and performing theatre to an audience. Held at the Little Theatre at UCT's Orange Street campus, styles of the festival include comedy, storytelling, farce and ballet. Themes and subjects that the students will address include a whodunit? detective mystery, and female empowerment. The festival is sponsored by the Student Development and Services Department (SDSD) and is produced in collaboration with the drama department and the Little Theatre. Bookings can be made through Sue Cole on tel 480 7129 or e-mail scole@hiddingh.uct.ac.za.

Junior ballet company launched

Recognising the need for a strong junior company in the Cape, UCT School of Dance senior lecturer Dianne Cheesman has formed the Cape Junior Ballet. The company will not only provide young dancers with specialised training and performing opportunities in a professional atmosphere, but will also facilitate their transition from classroom to stage. Cheesman, also Principle of the UCT Junior Ballet School, has put together a teaching faculty to train 26 children, aged between 10 and 16 years, from 14 local studios. The company will perform annually and participate in other performances around the country instilling in young audiences an awareness of the advantages of dance within the community. "An important aspect of this youth company is not only to develop an awareness of their talent but also to encourage them to use their talent to help those less fortunate," Cheesman said. The dancers come from studios in and around the Western Cape and have been selected by a prestigious audition panel of Associate Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt, Director of UCT's School of Dance, Sheila Stirling, Ann Broder and Sean Bovim.

Play looks at relationships

Lara Foot Newton and Gerhard Marx team up to present their new play Hear and Now at the Baxter Sanlam Studio from August 10 to September 3. Conceived in a world of darkness, Hear and Now tells the complex story of relationships, betrayal and the baggage that is brought into the present as a result of the past. The production combines the visual styles of object theatre, puppeteering and installation art to bury the viewer in a world where crippling biographies wash against the shore of everyday existence. Written by Foot Newton and Lionel Newton, the play encapsulates the comedy and tragedy of life and living. Bookings can be made at Computicket or the Baxter Theatre Centre on tel 680 3989.
