Students urged to remain vigilant

06 October 2003
With the university community preparing for the impending year-end examinations, Campus Protection Services (CPS) urges students to remain vigilant, as petty thefts tend to increase during this period.

Vincent Ricketts, CPS operations manager, said that students using computer laboratories and libraries at this time of the year must be watchful of their personal belongings.

He recommended that students do not leave their bags or cell phones unattended, even for short period of time.

"We also encourage students to carry their student cards with them at all times. Due to outsiders making use of the university's facilities, CPS will be conducting regular spot checks at various computer laboratories and libraries across the campus."

Students are also requested to ensure that their flat windows and doors are secured.

"We still receive reports of flats being left unlocked while students go to the bathroom or visit friends. In some instances, students are taking their safety for granted and sleeping with their doors unlocked," Ricketts said.

Students and staff are reminded that CPS is available after hours to accompany them from places of learning to their vehicles or residences.

"If you find yourself on campus late at night, do not hesitate to contact us to escort you to your vehicle, especially if you have parked in an isolated area."

Ricketts also reiterated his previous calls for the university community to ensure that all valuables are removed from their vehicles and locked away in the boot.

"CPS officers continue to find vehicles unlocked and we ask staff and students to close their windows and make use of their gear locks."
