Volunteers needed

23 September 2003
Stand up and be counted, or, at least, measured.

Researchers at the Sports Science Institute are looking for 1 000 volunteers who are willing to have their body fat measured in the interests of science.

Liesl Grobler and Siphiwe Tom in the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine are conducting the post-doctoral study which involves the measurement of bioelectrical impedance, used to estimate an individual's body fat and lean tissue percentage.

This is done by sending a very small and painless electrical current through the body, and then measuring the resistance of this current as it travels.

Volunteers should be between the ages of 15 to 70, male or female (not pregnant) and from all ethnic groups.

Participants are asked to bring a shorts and a t-shirt, and should not eat or drink anything for two hours and not exercise 12 hours before being tested. No alcohol is to be consumed for 12- 24 hours before the test.

The testing procedure, which will take 15 minutes, will include seven anthropometric measurements, three bioelectrical impedance measurements lying down, as well as two standing up.

To volunteer, please contact Liesl Grobler at 650-5125, or Siphiwe Tom at 650-4567.

* Do our genes cause torn achilles tendon or chronic tendon pathology?

If you have ever been diagnosed with these conditions, the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is also looking for volunteers to participate in their ongoing research.
