There's no business like the winning business

Her bag of goodies: Profs Doug Pitt (left) and John Simpson help multi-award winning Tracey-Anne Ruddy hold onto her many accolades.

Honouring the achievements of its many top-performing students, the Faculty of Commerce handed out its 2002 assortment of class medals and corporate awards last week.

And while quite a number of students scooped more than one prize, it was 2002 Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting graduate Tracey-Anne Ruddy who, to her own embarrassment, hogged much of the limelight at the event. Ruddy had to make nine trips to the podium as she garnered six corporate medals (three accompanied by cheques) and three class medals, leaving the rest of the prize-winners in the Centre for African Studies Gallery in some awe.

Her accolades included two medals from Ernst & Young, one from KPMG, and three from the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants. Currently hard at work on her academic articles, Ruddy will be joining KPMG next year for her three-year professional articles.

The Faculty had further cause for celebration when business science graduate Nimisha Bhagwan, in addition to a class medal, was awarded the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) Award, sponsored by Discovery Health, for the best actuarial science project at a South African university. Bhagwan is presently wading her way through ASSA's 15 professional examinations, while at work on a Postgraduate Diploma in Actuarial Science.
