19 August 2002
THE CENTRE for African Studies (CAS) in association with the UCT HIV/AIDS Unit is hosting Life is a Beautiful Thing, a film screening series dealing with HIV/AIDS, which will run until August 27.

The four screenings – they started on August 6 – take place on Tuesdays from 13h00 to 14h00 in the CAS Gallery, Harry Oppenheimer Institute Building on Upper Campus. Each screening will be followed by a short discussion.

The remaining movies for the month are:

A Miner's Tale on August 20 deals with Joaquim, a migrant labourer who is not only torn between his responsibilities for his junior wife in South Africa and his senior wife and family in Mozambique, but also between tradition and the responsibilities of his HIV status. The discussant at the screening will be Wanjairu Mukoma of the HIV/AIDS Unit.

Three short films will be screened on August 27: Ho Ea Rona ("We Are Going Forward") about four HIV+ friends who meet to reflect on their lives; Master Positive which deals with the eponymous central character who makes cheap coffins for the poor of Namibia where AIDS-related deaths are on the increase; and The Moment ("just before penetration") in which people from different backgrounds share their most personal thoughts about courtship and sexual behaviour. The discussant will be Nontombi Jubeji of the HIV/AIDS Unit.
