A unique exhibition titled; ‘When Rain Clouds Gather: Black South African Women Artists, 1940 – 2000’ is currently on show until 9 January 2023 at the Norval Foundation gallery in Tokai, Cape Town.
The curators of the exhibition, Dr Portia Malatjie from the University of Cape Town and Nontobeko Ntombela from the University of the Witwatersrand, borrow their title from Bessie Head’s first novel titled: ‘When Rain Clouds Gather,’ which deals with the themes of political and social change, science versus traditional ways, tribalism, race, gender and other themes which are exhibited in the artists’ works that form part of the exhibition.
