The University of Cape Town (UCT) hosted the 2025 Annual Staff Awards at the Baxter Theatre Centre on 24 November, marking the eighth year of the integrated celebration and the second under Vice-Chancellor Professor Mosa Moshabela’s leadership. More than 300 staff members across PASS, Academic, Technical and Research sectors were recognised in an event that reflects UCT’s commitment to unity and excellence.
From long-service milestones to new and evolving award categories, the evening honoured the people whose work underpins the institution’s reputation and its standing as the continent’s leading university.
The event also foregrounded the human stories behind institutional achievement. Among the most moving moments was the recognition of 45-year long-service recipient Terence Swarts, who spoke of UCT as both workplace and family, a place that shaped his life across decades. Awardees from transformation, creative works, social responsiveness and service excellence categories reflected on the impact of their efforts – from reimagining student success pathways to building community-centred urban projects.
