Row your boat

23 August 2004

UCT's men and women eights teams gave their University of Stellenbosch counterparts a rowing lesson when the teams raced each other on Misverstand Dam, about 20km out of Piketberg, two weeks ago. Both the men and women's A sides ran out easy winners in their respective events. Warm-up for the SASSU games in Port Alfred in September, the race is usually an informal affair - although very competitive - but organisers hope to establish the gathering as an annual intervarsity. In addition to UCT and Maties, a number of other clubs also took part, including UCT "Old Girls" and "Old Boys" teams, an Elgin group and the UCT development side who joined up with women's racers from a team known as Saxons. The races were preceded by the christening of two new boats that the UCT club recently acquired. Above, UCT coxswain Gcobani Sipoyo (in grey jacket) spurs on his team of, from left, Ashley Brander, Sarah Hopewell, Natalie Demblon (face hidden), Anya Byers, Jess Schulschenk, Tammy Zeeman, Victoria Chamberlain and Lindsey Schaefer during their race.
