Prof Dheda, head of Pulmonology and director of the Centre for Lung Infection and Immunity (CLII) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), was honoured with the prestigious Alan Pifer Award at UCT’s 2024 Staff Awards; and was also celebrated at the Research Celebration event. This award recognises socially responsive research that addresses critical challenges in South Africa and highlights Prof Dheda’s significant contributions to TB research. His work has advanced diagnostics, treatment, and healthcare policy, impacting millions globally, particularly in communities most affected by TB.
During both events, Prof Dheda’s achievements were celebrated as a testament to UCT’s commitment to driving impactful, socially responsible research. His pioneering efforts to integrate research with patient care and public health solutions were emphasised as exemplary in addressing South Africa’s pressing healthcare challenges.
