The global biocuration community will meet in Cape Town in April as the 19th International Biocuration Conference debuts on the African continent.

Taking place from 20 to 24 April, the conference is organised in collaboration with the International Society for Biocuration and local partners, including the Sickle Africa Data Coordinating Center (SADaCC), the African Bioinformatics Institute and the African Genomics Data Hub. This event marks a significant milestone for Africa’s growing role in global data science and genomics. The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Computational Biology Division, renowned for its contributions to African genomics capacity building, training, and data-driven health research, will contribute scientific leadership, coordination and engagement across the programme.

The annual gathering brings together curators, developers, data scientists, and researchers working at the intersection of biology and data, providing a platform to share advances in interpreting biological data while fostering international collaboration and community building in this rapidly evolving field. The event will also welcome high school learners who have been invited to engage with field experts in biocuration. This initiative aims to inspire the next generation by exposing them to career pathways in bioinformatics, data science, and life sciences, while highlighting the growing importance of data stewardship in modern research.

Date: 20–24 April
Venue: Lagoon Beach Hotel & Spa
