The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Surgical Society (SurgSoc) is once again hosting its charity ball to raise funds for critical health causes. They have set a R150 000 target for 2025.
Now in its fourth year, the ball, to be hosted on 20 September at the Sarah Baartman Hall, has become a flagship event on the UCT calendar, blending student leadership, academic collaboration, and philanthropy. In 2021, SurgSoc raised over R200 000 for Project Flamingo to support breast cancer patients. In 2022, more than R500 000 was raised in support of the Smile Foundation, and in 2023, over R100 000 went towards the Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) Emergency Funds for Emergency Surgery project. In 2024, SurgSoc raised over R150 000 in support of the GSH Trust’s Emergency Funds for Emergency Surgery initiative.
Thanks to a generous sponsorship from AlexForbes, who have already donated R90 400, the campaign is well on its way. This year, funds will be used to support Project Peacock, a South African public health non-governmental organisation that aims to provide equitable men’s health and cancer care. Operating as a partner of Groote Schuur Hospital, Project Peacock works tirelessly to address the burden of patients with prostate cancer. Many of these patients wait months before accessing treatment, with delays that can have devastating effects on treatment outcomes.
