UCT digital project is making isiXhosa texts accessible to contemporary African scholars
Dr Jacques de Wet of the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is leading a team in establishing a digital archive to make early isiXhosa publications authored by African intellectuals easily available for research. Through his own teaching and research, he has begun to introduce these African thinkers into contemporary sociology.

UCT part of multi-million research project to decarbonise aviation
The University of Cape Town (UCT) is one of the partners in a €40 million (approximately R718 million) three-year research project that aims to develop and improve next-generation catalysts that will play a large role in decarbonising the aviation sector by creating sustainable aviation fuels.

Endangered humpback dolphins more vulnerable than previously thought in South African waters
A recent study published in Integrative Zoology demonstrated a high incidence of abnormal beak (rostrum) conditions in South African humpback dolphins, highlighting a previously unreported threat to this endangered population.

UCT honours outstanding student leaders
The Department of Student Affairs (DSA) recently recognised some of the outstanding contributions made by the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) student leaders and organisations during the course of the year. The DSA honoured up to 10 individuals and 10 teams whose efforts have driven the advancement of UCT’s vision, mission and values – both within the university and its surrounding communities. This year, there were nine individual awards and six team awards.

UCT leads in training aspiring African neurologists
Training a pool of neurologists in sub-Saharan Africa is an important step towards Africanising the vital discipline of neuroscience on the continent. In addition, it will help to facilitate inter- and cross-disciplinary research and accelerate treatment options for common neurological disorders like stroke and epilepsy, and neurological infections such as tuberculous meningitis (TBM) and HIV-related dementia.

Study offers new insights into the biology of extinct giant reptiles
A University of Cape Town (UCT) study investigating the bone histology (microscopic structure) of multiple skeletal elements of dinocephalians has found that the long bones of the herbivores ( Keratocephalus , Moschops and Struthiocephalus ) and omnivore ( Jonkeria ) had thick bone walls that extended right into the middle of the bone.

UCT Health Sciences student only African recipient of Google Fellowship in subfield
PhD student Dennis Dogbey, from the Medical Biotechnology and Immunotherapy Research Unit at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine based at the Faculty of Health Sciences was recently awarded a 2021 Africa PhD Google Fellowship for Human-Computer Interactions – as this year’s only African recipient in this subfield.
