Astronomers from the University of Cape Town (UCT), including Professor Patrick Woudt and MSc student Reikantseone Diretse, are part of an international team of more than 300 researchers that has gained further insight into the physical processes at work during gamma-ray bursts (GRB).

UCT scientist leads ground-breaking project on fluctuating pollen levels
A multidisciplinary project which may fundamentally change the allergy treatment process and the way healthcare professionals respond to common allergies like asthma, hay fever and eczema is being led by the Division of Allergology and Immunology at the University of Cape Town's (UCT) Lung Institute. The project is examining the fluctuating pollen levels in South Africa and the subsequent effects on the human body.

The South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative - located at the University of Cape Town - as well as Biofabri and International Aids Vaccine Initiative recently announced an ongoing clinical trial to further evaluate the novel tuberculosis (TB) vaccine candidate MTBVAC in an adult endemic population.

Global fertility industry reaffirms pre-existing inequalities
University of Cape Town sociologist and feminist ethnographer Associate Professor Amrita Pande looks at the many interwoven processes that make up flows of fertility around the world. The global fertility trade can include anything that goes into the making of a baby. The industry now occurs in many countries and involves multiple kinds of reproductive actors or labourers, including egg providers, surrogates, brokers, doctors and prospective parents.

UCT researcher recognised for putting spotlight on cervical cancer
University of Cape Town Professor Lynette Denny, who has been researching methods of cervical cancer prevention among poor women for 25 years, says coalescing the areas of policy, resources, research and screening is essential to changing the status quo. Cervical cancer is significantly higher among black women in South Africa.

Media invite: Multimillion-rand new device to help with monitoring and treating TB in the Western Cape
The Western Cape has had insufficient PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography) capacity to meet the rapidly growing demand for these scans for clinical studies in tuberculosis (TB) to monitor progression from infection to disease, and to provide early indication of the efficacy of new TB drugs and drug combinations.

Media conference: UCT providing redress through science
In 2018, the University of Cape Town announced that it had 11 skeletons in its human remains collection that were found to have been unethically obtained by the institution in the 1920s. Nine of these individuals were brought to UCT in the 1920s from Sutherland in the Northern Cape. UCT commenced a restitution process for the nine sacred remains.
