UCT tuition fees increased by nearly 400% from 1923 to 2020
Inflation-adjusted tuition fees at the University of Cape Town (UCT) increased by an average of nearly 400% from 1923 to 2020. Most of the increase in tuition fees happened after 1970. These are the main findings of a paper recently published in the South African Journal of Higher Education .

The Algorand Foundation partners with UCT to develop the UCT-Algorand Fintech Innovation Hub
The Algorand Foundation is partnering with the University of Cape Town to establish the UCT-Algorand Fintech Innovation Hub (the Hub). This initial five-year partnership is supported through the Algorand Foundation Grant Program with a USD 2.6 million (R37.5 million) grant and will support UCT in establishing, running and operating the Hub.

Research on Baboons by UCT affiliated researchers in the Cape Peninsula
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) has received several queries recently regarding its involvement in baboon research and its contributions to practice and policy of the peninsula baboon program. This matter is under review and was discussed at the Senate Animal Ethics Committee on 11 November 2020.

Pregnancy, obesity and HIV explored in new UCT study
A new birth cohort study to examine obesity in pregnant women living with HIV, as well as their children, has secured the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics a R120 million grant from the United States (US) National Institutes of Health. UCT joins an international consortium which includes Columbia University and Northwestern University in the US.

The UChoose study conducted by the Desmond Tutu HIV Centr e at the University of Cape Town (UCT) has found that sexually active female adolescents prefer long-acting injectables than vaginal ring and pill as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention.

Artificially dimming the sun by injecting reflective particles into the upper atmosphere could help reduce the likelihood of “Day Zero” level droughts in Cape Town - by as much as 90% - in the future, say scientists from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in a paper recently published in Environmental Research Letters .

Climate Transparency Report highlights climate indicators and opportunities
South Africa’s energy sector remains one of the most coal-dependent and largest per capita polluters in the G20 despite being at greater risk of climate-related impacts. This is according to the latest report from Climate Transparency International that cautions G20 countries against quick-fix COVID-19 stimulus packages that favour fossil fuel industries.
