UCT research explores precarious balance of sleep, light and sedentarism among gamers
With frequent and long stints at their computers, the average gamer is a sedentary night owl, often compromising on sleep – especially quality sleep – and being exposed to too much blue light. The topic has been explored in University of Cape Town (UCT) PhD candidate Chadley Kemp’s doctoral thesis.

Sutherland reburial dates confirmed for November 2023
Following the relevant authorisation by the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture earlier this year and a permit granted previously by the South African Heritage Resource Agency, the University of Cape Town (UCT) confirms that the Sutherland Reburial will take in November 2023.

Invitation: Initiatives to improve and transform surgical education and training
Professor Michael Held, a consultant in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital, will deliver the last lecture of the year in the UCT Inaugural Lecture Series on Thursday, 16 November 2023. The lecture will focus on initiatives to improve and transform surgical education and training and is titled “Right Down to the Bone - Orthopaedic Training and Education”.

UCT to launch first online postgraduate diplomas on edX
The University of Cape Town (UCT) in partnership with 2U, Inc. , the company behind global online learning platform edX, will launch three new online postgraduate diplomas – one-year graduate level programmes – on edX . UCT will offer diplomas in marketing, public sector accounting and sports management, with the first cohorts for the new programmes starting in February 2025.

Allow all professional nurses and midwives to prescribe PrEP, say experts
In an editorial published in the South African Medical Journal , the University of Cape Town (UCT) HIV experts have urged the National Department of Health, the South African Pharmacy Council, nurse training institutions and authorities to allow all professional nurses and midwives to prescribe pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to enable simplified and de-medicalised PrEP with an urgent focus on expanding the PrEP service delivery workforce.
