Commemorating the Jagger Library fire: UCT, DStv launch ‘Stories from the Ashes’ project
Who can forget Sunday, 18 April 2021? It was a day of unspeakable tragedy as University of Cape Town (UCT) staff, students and the rest of Cape Town watched as a runaway wildfire gutted large parts of campus, including the beloved and historic Jagger Library.

UCT researcher involved in paper that rewrites the history of horse domestication in North America
When a large international group of archaeological researchers were looking for the strontium isotope data, they required to link the ancient North American horse to the land, and they contacted the University of Cape Town (UCT). Combining DNA sequencing with radiogenic isotope analysis and indigenous knowledge, a paper recently published in Science rewrites the history of horse domestication in North America.

New UCT-led consortium to tackle malaria drug resistance in South-East Africa
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has announced the launch of the Mitigating Antimalarial Resistance Consortium in Southern and East Africa (MARC SE-Africa), which will tackle the growing crisis of drug resistant malaria. Over the next four years, MARC SE-Africa will receive almost 4.2 million euros from the European Union’s research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe.

UCT, DStv to launch project on second anniversary of the April 2021 fire
On 18 April 2021, the University of Cape Town (UCT) lost its leading collection of African stories housed in the Jagger Library. Two years later, UCT has partnered with DStv to launch the Stories from the Ashes project, which will retell some of those lost stories and write new ones.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has retained its excellence in the education of professional accountants through the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Initial Test of Competence (ITC) results announced on Friday, 31 March 2023. This came at the end of a week of celebrating excellence at the university’s graduation ceremonies.

Special COVID-19 grants not only provided income relief – they also improved labour market outcomes
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant was the first in South Africa to target unemployed adults. Its main aim was to provide income support in a time of the crisis precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. But for the first time, new research has shown that it also played a key role in improving labour market outcomes for recipients.

In the acknowledgements that preface her highly praised thesis on a novel human urine treatment to make liquid fertiliser, Caitlin names many whose support lit her way. And among them is a dog called Ralph.

R2m partnership to strengthen capacity in cleft surgery for sub-Saharan Africa
About 4.6 million people in the world live with an unrepaired or inadequately repaired cleft, according to a 2022 study by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in the USA. These individuals are at risk of malnutrition, death from malnutrition, speech and language difficulties, and bullying and ostracisation.

UCT to play key role to boost TB research and accelerate capacity development at Univen
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Holistic Drug Discovery and Development Unit (H3D) has announced a new partnership in which the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), through its Strategic Health Innovation Partnerships (SHIP) programme, will award a grant to the University of Venda (UNIVEN) chemistry department to boost local tuberculosis (TB) research. This will also accelerate capacity development at the university.

Legal challenges impede successful implementation of mobile money services in SA and Zim - study
Financial services are difficult to access for many poor people, especially foreigners, refugees and people living in remote areas and rural areas. They lack documentation such as pay slips, proof of residence and identity documents required by banks to open an account, a University of Cape Town (UCT) study has found.
