Opportunity to become an accredited mediator for the University of Cape Town
The OIC has acquired funding to capacitate 40 permanent staff members. As a mediator, you will be capacitated in dispute resolution techniques that will contribute towards creating a UCT workplace environment that is conducive to resolving differences in a manner that promotes collegiality and addresses matters of discrimination, workplace grievances and harassment. The mediation course which will be facilitated by UCT Law@Work is internationally accredited (which costs R20 000 per delegate). This qualification will provide you many opportunities to expand your career development within and beyond UCT as a mediator. In addition to the training, you receive coaching, assessments, and mentorship.

Fungi could be essential to reaching net zero
Mycorrhizal fungi have been supporting life on land for at least 450 million years by helping to supply plants with soil nutrients essential for growth. In recent years, scientists have found that in addition to forming symbiotic relationships with nearly all land plants, these fungi are important conduits to transport carbon into soil ecosystems.

Water justice conference to share arts-based dialogue in mobile interactive exhibit at UCT
The University of Cape Town’s Centre for African Studies (CAS) Gallery will host the launch of Confluency – an interactive, transdisciplinary and mobile art exhibit created to engage diverse communities in water justice research and action – on Wednesday, 7 June 2023, from 17:00 to 19:00 at CAS, UCT’s Upper Campus.

South Africa’s first youth violence-prevention centre gets green light
University of Cape Town (UCT) student and community activist Zukile Ntentema has set the wheels in motion to establish the first youth violence-prevention centre on home soil. This example of an anti-crime initiative successfully adopted in the Global North will be housed at UCT, and will support government, law enforcement agencies and civil society to effectively monitor crime trends in the Mother City, and to inform new, targeted crime prevention strategies aimed at the youth.

Study finds trading time restrictions for onsite alcohol retailers in Western Cape will save lives
A team of researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT), led by Samantha Filby, recently collaborated with the DG Murray Trust to conduct a modelling study that estimated the health and economic impacts of restricting the trading hours of retailers selling alcohol for onsite consumption in the Western Cape.

More than one in 10 adults in urban South Africa have tried e-cigarettes, survey finds
Ahead of World No Tobacco Day on 31 May, a new survey, the South African E-Cigarette Survey 2022, has revealed that more than one in 10 (11.3%) adults in urban South Africa have tried e-cigarettes, and 4% of adults were regular e-cigarette users at the time of the survey.

New research on Sutherland Nine remains digs deeper into their lives, deaths
Newly published research by a multidisciplinary research team from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and other partner institutions has dug deeper into and revealed insights into the lives of the Sutherland Nine, who were donated unethically to UCT in the 1920s.

UCT study finds that Cradle of Humankind site is much younger than thought
New evidence shows that South Africa’s Cradle of Humankind site, pegged at four million years old, is much younger than was previously thought. This brings the narrative of its antiquity into question. The finding follows multidisciplinary investigations at Bolt’s Cave at this World Heritage Site, which has been dated to 2.27-1.70 million years old, almost two million years younger than previous research had assumed.

A new study by researchers at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Institute for Communities and Wildlife in Africa (iCWild) has revealed that caracals are exposed to multiple metal pollutants, including heavy metals and metalloids.

Australian and SA scientists unravel growth patterns of giant wombat-like animals from ancient Australian rainforests
Fifteen million years ago, giant wombat-like animals lived in the canopy of lowland Australian rainforests. These huge herbivorous marsupials, called Nimbadon lavarackorum, weighed about 70kg.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) remains the best university in Africa and has been ranked at 267th position, up three places from last year, by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) in their 2023 Global 2000 list, which was published on 15 May 2023.
