Government urged to extend Social Relief of Distress Grant
To mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on people living in poverty, government introduced the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant in 2020 – at the onset of the global health emergency – in an effort to support those in need.

Cattle farming expansion and unchecked climate change would expose more than one billion cows to heat stress
More than one billion cows around the world will experience heat stress by the end of the century if carbon emissions are high and environmental protection is low, according to new research published in Environmental Research Letters on 24 August 2023.

A rarely seen feat: UCT inspirational graduate dissertation upgraded to PhD
Just a year after registering for his LLM at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Dr Thapelo Teele’s dissertation was upgraded to a PhD. In the two short years since, he has successfully completed his doctoral thesis and been awarded a PhD in legal rhetoric studies – a rarely seen feat and one of the many reasons he is one of this year’s inspirational graduates.

University of Cape Town (UCT) alumnus Masego Mosupye is on a mission to expose young female sea cadets to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). She is a chemical engineer, former naval officer and now an ARMSCOR Dockyard employee.

Lack of confidentiality and feelings of shame related to experiences of domestic violence as well as service providers' discomfort in dealing with mental health issues were some of the reasons why detecting symptoms of depression, anxiety and experiences of domestic violence in Cape Town’s pregnant women is limited.

Dr Emma Whitelaw believes post-school education is a powerful tool for catalysing social mobility in South Africa, and it’s for this reason that she dedicated her PhD research to the topic – to demonstrate its importance, identify gaps that need to be addressed, and showcase the long-term benefits for the next generation.

New UCT SARChI Chair in Artificial Intelligence Systems says AI is not there to replace humans
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Associate Professor Deshen Moodley, who was recently awarded the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Chair in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Systems says AI is not there to replace humans but to work with them. This is the first SARChI Chair at UCT under the Department of Science and Innovation / National Research Foundation’s (DSI/NRF) new SARChI co-funding framework.
