UCT researchers join forces in global efforts to save our oceans
Researchers from three departments at UCT - environmental & geographical sciences, biological sciences and commercial law are part of a new multinational, interdisciplinary project - One Ocean Hub - which aims to transform global responses to challenges facing our oceans by bringing together researchers, organisations and local communities to tackle them.

UCT students reconceptualising District Six
Honours students from the UCT School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics have been hard at work exploring ways of reconceptualising District Six, while accommodating the ongoing restitution process and residents' ultimate return to the neighbourhood. This work is being done under the supervision of Professor of Architecture, Iain Low.

Reflections on lessons learnt during Cape Town's water crisis
When Day Zero - the day when taps would run dry - was narrowly averted in Cape Town and the drought ended, Associate Professor Gina Ziervogel undertook an 18-month research that would look at what other cities around the world could learn from Cape Town's response to the crisis.

UCT scientists aboard vessel to study harsh winter conditions in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica's sea ice
On 15 July 2019 the South African research vessel SA Agulhas II departed from Cape Town bound for the Southern Ocean and Antarctica's winter sea ice. Onboard are 25 researchers from the UCT, joining 70 participants from South Africa and the rest of the world.

UCT doctoral student's research contributes to South African mineral law
UCT PhD student, Louie van Schalkwyk has spent the last three years investigating the zoning policies procedures of three municipalities, Umhlathuze in KwaZulu-Natal, Sol Plaatje in the Northern Cape and the City of Cape Town in the Western Cape, and how they provide for mining. The purpose of her research was to determine whether these policies and procedures are suitable for the kinds of mining activities that take place in their jurisdiction.

When patients seek treatment for a disease or illness, doctors rarely pick up that the illness has something to do with their work environment. This is the observation of Dr Itumeleng Ntatamala, a medical doctor specialising in Occupational Medicine at UCT.

In a first for South Africa, a urine-recovery urinal system developed at UCT's Department of Civil Engineering has been incorporated into the design of Growthpoint Properties' new corporate headquarters for Exxaro in Centurion.

UCT GSB launches state-of-the-art academic conference centre
The UCT Graduate School of Business will launch its state-of-the-art academic conference centre on the GSB campus on Wednesday, 3 July. The centre will enhance the school's ability to convene thought leadership conferences and host sizeable international delegations.
