In remembrance: Cornelius Lindile Gcelu

23 January 2026

Dear colleagues and students

It is with profound grief that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Cornelius Lindile Gcelu (52), on Friday, 9 January 2026.

Mr Gcelu joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in September 1998 as a Campus Protection Services (CPS) protection officer. He worked at lower, middle and Hiddingh campuses.

Colleagues will remember him as a quiet person with a gracious personality. His colleagues said he was deeply committed to his work and made a significant contribution to the department. He will also be remembered for the care he showed to his family and siblings.

Mr Gcelu has been described as someone who had a great relationship with his colleagues and as a great team player.

He is survived by his wife, Bongeka; and children, Imibongo and Kungawo.

He will be buried on Saturday, 24 January 2026 in Engcobo, Eastern Cape.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Gcelu family, and our heartfelt condolences go out to them and all who knew our late colleague.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
