29 July 2025

Dear colleagues and students

Our hearts are heavy as we write to inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mx Margeaux Hendricks (39), on Wednesday, 16 July 2025 after a short illness.

Mx Hendricks joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2014 and was serving as an administrator for the Doctoral Degrees Board at the time of their passing. During their tenure at UCT, they contributed their skills and dedication across several departments, including the Michaelis School of Fine Art, Faculty of Humanities, School of Languages and Literatures, Office of the Registrar, Faculty of Commerce, Graduate School of Business, and the Academic Administration Office.

Mx Hendricks has been described as a trustworthy, tactful, diplomatic and consistently dependable colleague who became a cherished friend. They always went the extra mile, offering their time and support with unwavering generosity. Their vibrant laughter and warm presence will be deeply missed. Colleagues will remember Mx Hendricks for their honesty, integrity and sincerity, which shaped all their interactions.

Mx Margeaux will also be remembered by their colleagues as someone who genuinely permitted others to shine through everyday work interactions or through quiet, personal moments. Their colleagues said their presence was uplifting, and that they inspired all who had the privilege of working with them.

Mx Hendricks is survived by their partner, Jake; parents, Marlene and Steven; brother, Nicholas; and sister-in-law, Crystal.

The funeral was held on Wednesday, 23 July 2025. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, 30 July 2025 at 13:00 in Kramer Lecture Theatre 2.

The university has offered support to Mx Hendricks’ family during this time of bereavement. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their loved ones and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with our late colleague.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
