In remembrance: Lucy Saunders

It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of our colleague, Mrs Lucy Saunders (59). She passed away due to natural causes in hospital on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
Mrs Saunders joined the University of Cape Town (UCT) in July 2016 as a cleaner in the Campus Cleaning division of the Properties and Services Department. Most recently, she was assigned to the College of Music building on lower campus.
Her colleagues described Mrs Saunders as a humble and soft-spoken individual who was widely admired for her quiet strength and unwavering dedication. They said she was known for her strong work ethic and for being a woman of faith, often beginning each day in worship.
She is survived by her husband Robert, daughter Sisonke and son Samkele.
Mrs Saunders’ funeral was held on Saturday, 21 June 2025 in Samora Machel, Cape Town.
The university has reached out to offer support to the Saunders family during this period of bereavement. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and all who knew her.
