25 March 2026

Dear colleagues and students

As we continue building a solid senior leadership team that is a cornerstone of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) success, I write to share updates around a few key Leadership Lekgotla roles. This includes updates on some new appointments, as well as progress on ongoing recruitment processes.

Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Mr Richard van Huyssteen was appointed as acting COO with effect from 20 May 2025. Following approval by Council, he continues serving in an acting capacity until further notice.

Interim Registrar
Associate Professor Kathy Idensohn continues serving on an interim basis until the end of June 2026, or until a substantive appointment is made. The recruitment process is ready to commence.

Dean: Humanities
Professor Shose Kessi, who is in her second term, will step down on 31 December 2026. The recruitment process is ready to commence.

Dean: Law
As announced recently, Professor Mohamed Paleker has been appointed with effect from 16 February 2026.

Executive Director (ED): Libraries
Ms Ujala Satgoor will retire on 31 December 2026. The recruitment will commence.

ED: Properties and Services
Following the departure of Mr Mughtar Parker on 31 January 2026, Council has approved the appointment of Dr Warren Kukard as acting ED from 1 March 2026 until 30 June 2026. The recruitment process is ready to commence.

ED: Research
Ms Christina Pather continues serving as acting ED until 30 September 2026, or until a substantive appointment is made. The recruitment process is ready to commence.

We continue working to fill the vacant Leadership Lekgotla roles as soon as possible and building a strong, dynamic leadership team. This is a priority for us as we strive to maintain and amplify our excellence and impact moving forward.

Sincerely

Professor Mosa Moshabela
Vice-Chancellor
