In remembrance: Cynthia O’Connor

24 May 2022

Dear colleagues and students

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Ms Cynthia Hilary O’Connor (55), on Tuesday, 10 May 2022. She passed away in hospital surrounded by family members after a long illness.

Ms O’Connor joined the University of Cape Town in January 2008 as a front desk assistant in the Student Housing & Residence Life (SH&RL) department. She was part of the student housing team for 14 years and over this time she worked at Kopano Residence and Clarinus Village, among others.

Her passing is a huge loss to both her current and retired colleagues, as well as students. She will always be remembered for her infectious laughter and quiet strength. Her colleagues will also remember her as a generous and lovely woman who always had time and a kind word for her residences’ students and colleagues. She had everyone’s best interests at heart but was strong and resolute when the situation required.

Ms O’Connor is survived by her daughters Kelly and Carly, her son-in-law and her grandson Malakai.

She was laid to rest on Saturday, 21 May in Athlone. The SH&RL department has engaged with Ms O’Connor’s family to have a memorial service on campus. The details are yet to be confirmed.

The university has reached out to offer support to the O’Connor family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved her, during this time of bereavement.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
