In remembrance: Mogamat Philemon

22 April 2022

Dear colleagues and students

It is with a profound sense of sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Mogamat Philemon (53), on Saturday, 26 March 2022. He passed on peacefully at home after being diagnosed with cancer in June 2019.

Mr Philemon joined the university on 16 October 1989 as a cleaner in the main section of UCT Libraries. He later worked as a library assistant in various departments and branch libraries, with the Interlibrary Loans department being his final workplace.

He will be missed by his colleagues, family and friends, who have described him as humble, friendly, reliable, meticulous and having a strong work ethic.

Mr Philemon is survived by his wife Najoemoeniesa, his three children Aziza, Shafeeqah and Mogamat Niyaaz and three grandchildren.

He was buried according to Muslim rites from his home in Malibu Village in Blue Downs moving to his final resting place at the Mowbray Muslim Cemetery on 27 March 2022.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Philemon family and during this time of bereavement our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved Mr Philemon.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
