In remembrance: Thomas Makonie

23 August 2021

Dear colleagues and students

It is with heartfelt sadness that we inform you of the passing of our colleague, Mr Thomas Makonie (56), who worked at Student Housing & Residence LIfe. He was based at Kopano residence at the time of his death.

He passed away at Melomed Hospital in Mitchell’s Plain on 25 July 2021.

He started working at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in March 1985. Mr Makonie has been described as a stalwart member of the UCT student housing team. Last year he celebrated 35 years of service, having served diligently at numerous residences such as Fuller Hall, Rochester House, Kopano and Baxter Hall.

He was a hardworking and passionate colleague and friend – always willing and able to go the extra mile. This is evident from his relationships and the appreciation from residence students, staff and stakeholders.

Mr Makonie is survived by his wife Marilyn; children Ralton, Zenobia and Muriel Balie; and grandchildren Tamia and Micah.

His funeral took place on Saturday, 31 July 2021 in Mitchell’s Plain.

The university has reached out to offer support to the Makonie family and our sincere condolences go out to them and all who knew and loved him during this time of bereavement.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
