Protection of Personal Information Act engagement session

30 April 2021 | Royston Pillay, Registrar

Dear colleagues

The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), which has long been prominent on the agenda of the higher education sector in our country, will come into effect on 1 July 2021.

Universities South Africa (USAf) has issued guidelines that offer a high-level overview of POPIA and provide direction to public universities for the successful implementation of the Act. USAf’s guide to implementing POPIA is accompanied by a single-page introduction to the Act, as well as a document setting out of some of the POPIA considerations for researchers. I want to encourage you to familiarise yourself with these documents.

We will arrange an engagement session for staff where the University of Cape Town’s POPIA team will provide an overview of the Act, elaborate on the USAf guidelines and outline the processes required by the university to comply with POPIA. The team will also be available to respond to any questions you may have.

The date for this POPIA session will be communicated in due course. In the meantime, you are invited to submit POPIA-related questions to popia@uct.ac.za, which will inform the planned POPIA engagement session for staff.

Sincerely

Royston Pillay
Registrar
