In remembrance: Phenyo Makgabo

13 July 2020

Dear students and colleagues

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the unexpected death of our student Mr Phenyo Makgabo (23) who passed away in his sleep on Thursday, 2 July 2020.

Mr Makgabo was studying towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting. He obtained his BCom in Accounting in 2018.

He will be remembered by his peers for being unapologetically himself and was regarded as being a walking definition of living every day as if it were his last. He always dreamed big and once those dreams became a reality, he dreamed even bigger. He brought light into the lives of his family, who have seen him living up to his name Phenyo, which means victory. To his only brother, he was an inspirational person who pushed and encouraged him to be better.

Mr Makgabo is survived by his parents, Xolani and Dipuo, and brother, Neo.

He was laid to rest in Pretoria on Monday, 13 July.

Having reached out to the family to extend our support, the university once again extends its deepest condolences to Mr Makgabo’s family and all those who knew him, wishing them great strength during this sad time.

Sincerely

The UCT Executive
