Professors Peter Piot and Liz Corbett of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) will deliver the annual Steve Lawn Memorial Lecture on 19 March at UCT’s Institute of Infectious Disease & Molecular Medicine (IDM).

Piot, the director of the LSHTM, will speak on advancing global health and strengthening the HIV response in the United Nations’ sustainable development goals era. Corbet’s talk is titled ‘Re-imagining HIV and TB screening’. She is the 2018 Steve Memorial Fund Awardee.

The late Steve Lawn was a professor of infectious diseases and tropical medicine at the LSHTM and UCT and was closely linked to the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre. He was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Lawn, who was well known for his pioneering work on the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis among populations affected by HIV/AIDS, died in 2016.

The lecture will take place from 16:30 to 18:30 in the Wolfson Pavilion Lecture Theatre.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Contact Lavinia Browne for more information.
