Goal: Florian Schwuchow and Matthew McConkey celebrate Schwuchow's equaliser against Rhodes University at the SASSU hockey games.

UCT's hockey squads picked up their games on the second day of the South African Students' Sports Union (SASSU) championship at Stellenbosch University, but faltered again on the third.

Putting their 0-5 defeat on Monday behind them, the women pipped the University of Free State by 2-1 on the morning of Tuesday, 3 July. And later that afternoon, the men drubbed Rhodes by 5-1, despite going one down early in the first half.

In their final pool games on Wednesday, 4 July, the women were trounced 0-6 by the powerhouse Stellenbosch - one of the tournament favourites - while the men lost 1-4 to the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Despite these defeats, both sides finished third in their respective pools. Overall fifth-place finishes are still on the cards for the UCT teams, but they would have to win their final two games of the tournament.
